Week 9 | Space + Art

Astronomy and Astrophysics are not only my major fields of study, but also my mentor that guide me to explore more about science. The charm of the universe attracted me so deeply that I determined to dedicate myself to Astro. When I was a kid, I always wondered about the extraterrestrial lives, far distant galaxies, as well as the possibilities of the expansion of our human civilization to every corner of the universe. Since then, astro started to become not only my interest field waiting for my further exploration, but also the dream that I wish to realize.

Hypothesize 3D Universe Status


After watching the lecture videos that Professor Vesna talked about the Solar System and the moon, I was inspired to talk about one concept I investigated during my astro classes and research in the past. The construction of Interstellar Map in three dimensions with certain degree prediciton is extremely necessary. Currently we have too little usable information about other solar systems, external galaxies, and the unobservable universe. Sending the satellites into deep space and constructing the star map can based on mathematical modelling and simulation lay the foundation for the future spacecraft Interstellar Map system as well as our knowledge towards every unknowns in the universe.


Different Propulsion Method in Space

Another very theoretical and facinating concept is the curvature engine. After reading about the "Non-Working-Substance Propulsion Possibilities during Intestellar Travelling" written by Mr. Xuesen Qian, the science community started to hypothesize and develop engines that do not use working substance as fuels for propulsion. The curvature engine hypothesized is a kind of spacecraft engine that utilize the curvature difference in the three dimension universe as propulsion to accelerate or decelerate. This is just like a small paper boat in the bath and adding soap at the back of the boat will lead to the difference of surface tension, which consequently can push the boat forward.

With all these cutting-edge hypothesis, discoveries, and inventions, I am so proud that our civilization is stepping closer and closer to the space age. The further development in frontier physics and astronomy might someday lead to an unparallel breakthrough which can help us realize the universe dream eventually. Unfortunately, perhaps I was born too early to see those breakthroughs and that glory to come, but I firmly believe that someday, we will definitely spread the flame of this great civilization to every corner of the universe!

    I found your post a great way to sum up our week 9 module on space and art. Technology has been extremely advanced in helping us contribute to the bigger scientific questions of the universe! I like how you spoke of theoretical crafts, it makes me think of what can be not only conceptualized but created. I wonder if scientists of today like Elon Musk can explore these attributes of science fiction and concepts to be truly explored into our reality. great post!

Extra Credit Event 4 | The Book "Art As Social Practice"

On May 18th, I attended my last event at this quarter. The event is basically the discussion about the book "Art As Social Practice", and the host same time is the guest speaker is the author and editor of this book-Ms Xtine Burrough. Together with Margaretha, guest speakers hold a meaningful book discussion conference! Event 3 | 132nd Faculty Research Lecture

On May 17th, I attended one of the events: The 132nd Faculty Research Lecture. This event was hosted by Professor Alice Shapley, the vice chair of Astronomy&Astrophysics from the department of Physics and Astronomy. I chose to attended this event was mainly because the host and related materials are coherent with the fields of study of my second major-Astrophysics. The main topic of this lecture is "Travelling Back to the Birth Time of the Galaxies", which is exactly the contents of the Universe History that I learned from lower-division astro classes and high school before. Event-132nd Faculty Research Lecture Professor Shapley initiated the lecture with the general description of the galaxies, types and categories, and the theories of formation. Through mentioning about the commonly-known Big Bang, professor Shapely introduced us the spending timeline and the entire development process of the universe.
