Week 3 | Mechanization & Robotics and Arts
Industrilization led the human society into a brand new era. Mass Production, technology innovation, and mechainization all facilitate people's life, promote social development, and provide more possibilities. Admittedly, all these advantages, progress, and convenience are accompanied by certain drawbacks and potential risks. Under this circumstance, there are many phenomenom and issues worthy for us to consider from a macro perspective. Some implicit trends can be inferred through the responds of the public to the industralization hundreds of years ago to the reaction of the crowd to the mechanization nowadays.
Hypothesized Mechanized World |
There are several movies I've watched gave me insights to reflect upon the responds of the public to the mechanization. For example, "The Matrix" viewed the society from the standpoint of contradiction between utopia and reality. The majority accepted and embraced the industralized, mechanized, digitalized world, even if it is just a fantasy. Due to the convenience and merits the matrix and robots bring to human beings, the society choose to waive their freedom as sacrifice, while only very few minorities choose to stand against such "mechanization and digitalization" of the human society. This movie brings up the philosophical question and potential risks that might happen in the future, to remind us to consider every aspects comprehensively and seriously nowadays at this fast-developing era.
Movie-The Matrix |
Another movie I wish to mention is "I, Robot", which depicted the possible future and relationship between human and robots. After complete mechanization, the society will still move forward to develop more advanced technology, such as the huamn-like robots, which will bring up lots of issues like moral issues and intelligence crisis. Similarly, this also serve as an alert for us to seriously develop our technology so that it will not go out of control.
Movie-I, Robot |
Thanks to the development in the area of machine learning, artificial intelligence, etc., our society can move forward in a even faster pace. Perhaps someday, through great breakthroughs on technology and sciences, we can spread the flame of human society to the far corner of the universe. For now, still, we have to consider many issues, either explicit or implicit ones. For instance, the destruction of pure value of arts by mechanized reproduction on arts mentioned by Walter Benjamin, potential intelligence crisis, and moral issues, all should be considered carefully. In this way, we can both maximize the utility of mechanization as well as control the potential problems and risks in the future.
