Week 6 | BioTech+Art

Some scholars said that there are two keys for human society to step forward into a new era: One is frontier Physics&Astronomy, which discover the extraterrestrial unknowns in the universe. And the other is Medicine&Human Biology, which deal with issues of human bodies and life. Fortunately, I have been working in these fields of study since secondary school, and I think as Joe Davis and Professor Vesna mentioned there is indeed arts involved in these fields, especially with the Biology and Biotech I wish to discuss about.

Biotech & Arts?

Even though technically I am not a "Biology Expert", who majored in this field, still I have lots of chances to touch on it when studying correlated fields such as Astrobio. Speaking of these biotech, from my perspective, although Professor Vesna mentioned in the lecture that some scholars have certain definition and categorization on what Bioart, still I think in most cases such restrictions cannot eliminate the truth that there are artistic elements involved entangled with biotechs. In fact, Biotech with artistical elements and features might be a great illustration and example of the combination of the humanities&art and the sciences.

Biotech&Art-Genetic Editing

Despite the neuron activity imaging and mathematical modelling of brains of neurobio tech from my week4 blog, there is another example which is genetic editing and regroup in the field of biotech can be a good illustration of binding of arts and biotech. Such genetic biotech require the skills of multilayer and diversified ways of thinking from an artistic perspective, and be able to utilize the artistic, creative point of view to test and generate final output. For instance, the creation of Vision in the movie Avengers2, which involve the integration of metallic ions and active biological cell. Vision himself is a great fine piece of art which comes from the combination of arts and biotech, where Tony Stark and Doctor Banner create unconciously with their artistic and creative point of view. The integration of their professional knowledge backgroud in biological fields and their creative, artistic vision and point of view, masterpieces can finally be created.

Movie Avengers 2--Vision--Biotech+Artistic Product

Just as Joe Davis said, Laboratory is a playgroud. I personally strongly agree with this point and I believe that laboratory is a place that experimenters can integrate their knowledges with their creative artistic visions, to create something new. Think creatively, artistically, diversely, and the chains can be broken and there will be new breakthroughs.
